urban weaving

This project seeks to find an architectural solution to the gap that occurs in the urban fabric, in particular when architectural forms do not connect with the streetscape.

The site is a New York housing development located in Gowanus section of Brooklyn, Wicker Gardens.  This site embodies the typical thinking of its time, removal of urban fabric and insertion of a tower within a park. The result being tightly knit community that functions within the tower that has little interaction with the community of the surrounding blocks.

Our design takes the historic geometries that used to exist on the site, primarily three story brownstones, and attempts to generate a new urban fabric.  This collage of historic geometries with current is reflected in the merging of forms within our proposal.
